CLINICAL COORDINATOR
Full-time
Potential start date:  1 October 2010

Responsible for all treatment aspects of residents assigned to his/her caseload at The Children's Home.  Serves as a member of the leadership team and brings together various components of treatment into one unified treatment plan.  Provides individual, group and/or family therapies as required for each youth.  This is a full-time, exempt position that reports to the Director of Residential Treatment Services.

Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work or other comparable degree with a focus in family therapy from an accredited college is required.  Experience with behavioral planning and/or analysis is requisite.  Experience working with adolescents who have been diagnosed with autism a plus.  At least one year experience working with children and families, demonstrated writing skills, and eligibility to become licensed as an LMFT, LCSW, or LPC are required. Training in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, Trauma Informed Care, CPR, mandated reporting, and professional boundaries is required and may be taken post-hire. Ability to work with colleagues, youth and family members from diverse educational, economic, ethnic and religious backgrounds is requisite.

 

SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER
Full-time

We are seeking a Special Education Teacher to provide highly-structured, intensive instruction to middle school students with moderate to severe intellectual, developmental and emotional disabilities.  S/he will implement an educational program, using adaptive technology and sensory integration to facilitate the treatment process in compliance with the student’s IEP.  S/he will employ differentiated and multi-sensory teaching methods that enable students to think critically, solve problems and demonstrate learning skills.

Requirements include:  A Bachelor’s degree in Special Education from an accredited college or university and CT Certification in Special Education.  Minimum two years teaching experience in a special education classroom setting; experience with students who are intellectually and/or developmentally disabled preferred.  Knowledge of materials and functions of a Positive Behavioral Support system and educational and adaptive technology.  A positive attitude, demonstrated good judgment and ability to establish rapport with students, colleagues and direct care employees from diverse ethnic, economic, educational and religious backgrounds. Commitment to the CT Code of Responsibility for Teachers.  Fluency in Spanish is a plus.  This is a full-time, 10-month, academic year position.  Full benefits.

 

RN or LPN
32 hours per week

Responsible for the medical and health management of youth in residence at The Children’s Home. Implements the nursing process with residents including carrying out physicians’ orders regarding medication and treatment. Monitors and ensures quality medical care through observation and evaluation. Administers medications and controlled drugs. Maintains medical records. Responds to emergencies.

Requirements:  Must have graduated from an accredited nursing program and be licensed as an LPN or RN in CT.  At least four years of experience as an LPN or RN, preferably with adolescents who have mental health diagnoses and are emotionally disturbed and/or behaviorally disordered, is preferred. Must be able to work independently while seeking supervision when necessary.

Must have:  knowledge of practical nursing theory, practices and ethics; knowledge of current medications used to treat psychiatric illnesses and behavioral disorders; knowledge of infection control practices; some knowledge of nutrition and diets; basic knowledge of medical and lab sciences; considerable interpersonal skills; ability to respond in emergencies; ability to keep detailed records; ability to listen and provide empathetic assistance to residents in meeting their needs and carrying out prescribed treatments.

The ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing is requisite, as is the ability to work with colleagues and residents from diverse ethnic, economic, educational and religious backgrounds. 

RESIDENTIAL COUNSELOR
Full-time

The Residential Counselor provides guidance, supervision, mentoring and life skills training to youth in residence, individually and in groups.  S/he ensures maintenance of a healthy, therapeutic milieu and sound, trauma-informed, treatment focused therapeutic activities in the House. At least one Residential Counselor in each House may be named as Educational, Family, Physical Health/Life Skills or Spiritual Liaison for the House. 

The Residential Counselor’s position involves both 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. shifts. This position may involve the use of physical restraints (using Therapeutic Crisis Intervention) if a young person is attempting to hurt him/herself or another human being. This is a full-time, non-exempt position that reports to the House Supervisor.

Requirements:  AS degree in psychology, social work or a human services field (BA or BS degree preferred), and one year of experience working with emotionally disturbed, behaviorally disordered youth are required. Training in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, Trauma Informed Care, Risking Connection and CPR and First Aid is required and may be provided by the agency post-hire, before assuming job responsibilities. The ability to apply the knowledge acquired during training while fulfilling job responsibilities with the youth is requisite.  A valid driver’s license and good driving record are required to ensure safety of the youth and coverage by the agency’s insurance carrier.  The ability to work collegially with youth and other employees from diverse educational, ethnic, economic and educational backgrounds is required.

AWAKE NIGHT COUNSELOR
Full-time Girls’ House

Responsible for overall therapeutic care and security of residents during the third shift (9:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.). As a last resort, may be involved in physical restraints to ensure safety of residents and staff if a resident is attempting to hurt him/herself or another person.  Provides for security and normal functioning of the physical plant and grounds.   Reports to Awake Night Supervisor 1 or 2, depending on days worked.
Requirements:  B.S./B.A. in psychology, social work or a human services field, or AS and equivalent experience is required as is the ability to establish a respectful relationship with residents.   Previous experience working with emotionally disturbed children is preferred. Must have TCI, Risking Connection, CPR and First Aid training. Must be Med Certified or become Med Certified within 6 months of employment.  Ability to remain calm and maintain control in a crisis situation is required.

This is an "awake" position, and sleeping on the job is a violation of agency policy. Ideally, the Awake Night Counselor has worked third shift previously and has proven his/her ability to remain awake while on duty. The ability to work collaboratively with other employees with diverse educational, economic, ethnic and religious backgrounds is requisite, as is the willingness to work in a high stress work situation that requires flexibility.
