Counseling Support Staff
We are seeking qualified candidates to provide supportive guidance and counseling for adolescents with Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD); primarily providing assistance to youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).  These positions may involve the use of physical restraints (using Therapeutic Crisis Intervention techniques) if a young person is attempting to hurt him/herself or another human being.  Candidates may interview for placement in one or all three (3) of the following milieus:

Residential 1:1within our residential setting to assist in providing guidance, mentoring and social life skills for assigned adolescents with PDD/ASD.  This is a per diem position.

Paraprofessional Educatorsto work closely with assigned students and cooperating teachers in our Learning Center delivering a specified student’s educational plan either in or outside of the classroom and develop behavior modification and strategic intervention programs, document daily behavioral observations and other pertinent data.  This is a 10 month/academic year position.

Community Based Mentorsto provide guidance, mentoring, and social/life skills training for adolescents on the autism spectrum in their respective family homes/community.  S/he works to monitor behavior and build a therapeutic relationship with the assigned youth.  S/he will be required to assess, develop and implement behavior and skill building strategies in the areas of personal care, daily living, and community activities and document same.  Mentors may be required to transport, using an agency vehicle, the mentee to community activities as part of a socialization strategy.  This is a per diem position.

Requirements:  To be a viable candidate, individuals must possess a minimum of an AS degree in psychology, social work or other human services field. A BA or BS degree is preferred.  One year of experience working with emotionally disturbed, behaviorally disordered youth with PDD/ASD is required.  Positions require proven strong interpersonal skills and willingness to be flexible with the work schedule to meet agency needs.  Candidates must possess strong writing skills.  A valid driver’s license and good driving record to maintain agency insurance coverage is requisite.  Must attend and pass agency Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, Risking Connection and CPR/FA training. 

The Children's Home, COMMUNITY SERVICES, INC.

Direct Care Counselor, Potter’s House:  full-time available

The Direct Care Counselor provides guidance, supervision, mentoring and life skills training to adolescent females residing in the Therapeutic Group Home. S/he ensures maintenance of a healthy, therapeutic milieu and sound, trauma-informed treatment-focused therapeutic activities. 
An AS degree is required. A BS/BA degree in psychology, social work, criminal justice or another human services field is preferred.  At least one year of experience working with seriously emotionally disturbed youth, preferably in a residential setting are required.  Alternatively, an AS degree and at least two years of progressively more responsible experience with the same population are acceptable.
The incumbent must know and be able to apply the agency’s trauma-informed treatment philosophy and be able to maintain certification in TCI, CPR, First Aid and DCF Medication Administration.  A valid driver’s license and insurance coverage through the agency’s insurance carrier must be maintained.  The ability to work with residents and other employees of diverse ethnic, educational, religious and economic backgrounds is requisite. 

COMMUNITY MENTORS
Middlesex County and New Haven County

Awake Night Counselor
North Haven
Full-time

Provide guidance, supervision, and security to residents residing in the Therapeutic Group Home during the third shift (9:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.). Ensure maintenance of a healthy, therapeutic milieu and sound, trauma informed treatment.  This position may involve the use of physical restraints using TCI techniques with a resident who is in crisis. The Counselor’s schedule may include mandated overtime and shifts on Saturdays and/or Sundays. Reports to the Direct Care Co-Supervisors. This position is full-time (30 hours or more) and non-exempt. 

An AS degree or 60 college credits are required; a BA/BS in human services field is preferred. Must be able to establish a respectful relationship with residents.   Previous experience working with emotionally disturbed youth with trauma histories is preferred. Must successfully pass and be certified in  TCI, Risking Connection, CPR and First Aid. Must be DCF Med Certified or become Med Certified within two months of employment.  Ability to remain calm and maintain control in a crisis situation is required.

This is an "awake" position, and sleeping on the job is a violation of agency policy. Ideally, the Awake Night Counselor has worked third shift previously and has proven his/her ability to remain awake while on duty. The ability to work collaboratively with other employees with diverse educational, economic, ethnic and religious backgrounds is requisite, as is the willingness to work in a high demand work situation which requires flexibility and innovation.
