The Learning Center at The Children's Home is accredited by the Connecticut State Department of Education as an educational institution for children and adolescents with emotional and learning difficulties. The Learning Center serves residential students who live at the Children's Home and day students who live elsewhere but attend school at the Learning Center.

Programs of the Learning Center

• Academic Program: The Academic Program is segmented into two teams. Team One is for students ages 8 to 13, and Team Two is for students 13 to 21. Traditional courses such as mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, computer education, art, health, and physical education are taught in nontraditional ways using innovative, multisensory, hands-on techniques. The program is designed for students aspiring to pursue some form of higher education.

Vocational Program: The Vocational Program has five major components: horticulture, small animal husbandry, culinary arts, photography, and fine arts. Students in this program are offered courses in job-seeking, problem solving, and conflict resolution. Through hands-on experience, they develop a work ethic which will help them succeed later in life.

Life-Skills Program: The Life-Skills program offers functional academics to students so they may achieve independence or a degree of independence as they plan their futures.

TREC Program: The Transitional Resource Educational Classroom (TREC) evaluates the behavioral and academic performance of new students who are over twelve years of age. Each student stays in TREC until the staff determine which of the other three programs will best suit the student's needs. He or she is then moved to that program.
