Learning Center

 The Learning Center at The Children’s Home, which is an Approved Special Education Facility, provides gender-specific special education for residents of the agency as well as up to 30 day students.  This includes an Extended School Year (ESY) option in the summer.  Certified by the Connecticut State Department of Education, we offer small classes, an integration of the arts through Wesleyans’ Green Street Art Center, vocational programming and job training and an active intramural athletics program.  We provide our young people with opportunities to learn at an accelerated pace with individualized attention to their special needs, appropriate technology to assist their learning and Positive Behavioral Supports to reward positive and appropriate behavior.  Our curriculum is focused on the development of age appropriate reading and math skills but otherwise is extremely flexible to assure that students earn the necessary credits for graduation here or in their future schools.  The school also offers paid work-study options for youth who are ready to learn how to get and keep a job.  These students work a small number of hours off campus during the school year in businesses, non-profit agencies, or municipal workplaces.  This program continues into the summer with more work hours and in-depth learning about work and personal banking.  The main objective of our school is to create success for our young people so they will continue to advance when they return to public school or move on to higher education.
