Summer School
Summer of 2011 – Extended School Year
The Learning Center experienced another very successful Extended School Year Program (ESY) with over twenty students attending the program. This year we expanded the program to include four teachers with support staff to address the educational needs of all the students. The program was divided into two sections, Reading/English and Mathematics. Most of the students who attended worked to maintain the skills they acquired during the school year while several of our high school students attended the summer to recover credits they were lacking.
The philosophy of PBS (Positive Behavior Support) was followed and the points earned were converted into Learning Center dollars that would be used at an incentive cart on Thursday. This became an on-going math lesson for the students who were required to convert their points into money, make withdrawals from their bank account and then write out a check before they could purchase any items from the cart. This activity helped the students see the connection between math and daily life skills.
The students in Miss Peck and Miss Hughes classes used their math and reading skills every Friday when they prepared treats for the class ranging from making pudding to pancakes.
The four teachers were able to keep the students engaged in learning throughout the summer making this another successful summer.
