WOMEN ADVOCATES FOR YOUTH (THE WAY)
Second Annual Women of Achievement Awards 2011
The Women Advocates for Youth (THE WAY) held their Women of Achievement Award event on March 29, 2011 just as a very full Women’s History Month was coming to a close. The award recipient for 2011 is Teresa Younger, Executive Director of the Permanent Commission on the Status of Women.
Teresa C. Younger, Charter Member of THE WAY directs the State’s leading force for women’s equality, has expertise running the gamut from policy and management to philanthropy and youth development. Teresa is president of the Board of the Girl Scouts of Connecticut. She also sits on the boards of the National Association of Commissions for Women and the Universal Health Care Foundation, serves on the Academy of Educational Development’s New Voices National Advisory Board and the American Camp Association Public Policy Committee, and is a trustee of the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame.
THE WAY was created to pilot ways for women of influence to help girls living in the residential treatment program and group homes of The Children’s Home to develop their own self-worth and reach their full potential.

What has happened so far, an what is happening?
In December 2008, the WAY officially inducted their charter members, and asked for commitments from them to help The Children’s Home care for, teach, inspire and involve the girls in residence there. Some of the girls from The Home were there.
Amal Elsana Ahl’jooj, a Bedouin feminist, came to speak to our girls and talk about overcoming societal, personal, familial and international barriers to becoming who you are meant to be.
Laura Donna, a scent consultant came to involve our girls in an interactive workshop to share the joys of fragrance. Laura is a fragrance educator and coach, she has donated this experiential activity for the girls to learn the language of scent and discover a new world of enjoyment.
