Vocational
Education at The Children's Home
Why Vocational Education?
Children referred to
The Children’s Home are
increasingly more emotionally disturbed
and learning disabled. They are less capable
of success in the classroom and in the workplace.
Note the statistics:
• In 1990, there was a 37% unemployment rate among
adults with learning disabilities, and 23% of
the LD high school graduates were without a job. These rates are three to five
times higher than the
unemployment rates reported for the general population.
•
Another study reported that youth with handicaps
had “lower wages, fewer fringe benefits, worked fewer hours, and
were employed in jobs requiring less skill than
students without handicaps.”
In dealing with a community of learners with
emotional, behavioral, and learning challenges, experience has taught
us the importance of focusing on what is essential for our students to
lead productive lives. We are in the process of expanding our vocational
programming to help these students not only increase their academic success;
but to provide them with the life skills that they are in need of.
We currently offer a Work Skills/Independent
Living class, and a Culinary Arts class. We have just received a grant
to offer an Advanced Culinary Arts class with an off-grounds job component.
We hope to expand our offerings in the future.
We’re on our way!! If you would be interested in helping our program,
please contact Christine Jakubiec, vocational
counselor at 635-6010 ext. 370 or cjakubiec@childhome.org.
