The Tutoring Program
Many of our young people have not had opportunities to experience success and confidence in their academic performances. Some have even missed a great deal of classroom time due to interruptions caused by their life’s difficulties. The Tutoring Program was created in 2000 for Volunteers to offer academic assistance to so many of our young people who are deficient in their academic work. Volunteers in The Tutoring Program make a dramatic impact on a young person’s academic life by working one-on-one with a student and helping them develop good study skills and an enthusiasm for learning.
Most of the students in need of an academic tutor require assistance with reading skills and math. Volunteers are paired with a young person and help with homework and make-up assignments in these and other areas with the goal of helping the young person feel more confident in their academic abilities.
Volunteers go through a screening process which is required by the State of Connecticut. They are then matched with a student and commit to working with that student one hour per week for the duration of the academic school year. The Tutoring Program is an excellent choice for Volunteers who have little to no mentoring experience but, would like to try developing a positive relationship with a young person who needs guidance.
